Other Work Carried out by Payne and Son

FJ Payne and son does many varied engineering projects, one of the most unusual of these was re-machining some church bell carriers for Oxford's prestigious bell hangers. We had to re-machine the ends of the carrier to suit the bearings, thus enabling the endpins to rotate smoothly within them.

The specialist large equipment needed to work on these very heavy bell carriers is at Paynes and used for a variety of different work.

Paynes prides itself on the fact that it has a huge range of machinery and experienced staff enabling us to carry out any mechanical engineering job however large or small.

A further example of Paynes adaptablity is the design and manufacturing od carpet lifting equipment for a well known carpet retailer. The equipment designed enables large rolls of carpet to be moved up and down racking with the push of a button.

Having been in business for 90 years it is very unusual for Paynes to get in an engine that we haven't seen in the past. However we have recently experienced this. We were presented with the 1908 Deutz 2 stroke diesel boat engine. We had to re-metal, bore, machine and refit the main bearings to the right size. Fit the cylinder/piston liner, and as 2 stroke engines do not have valves we had to cut a new inlet, exhaust qand transfer ports. New gasket grooves had to be cut on the head face, and then all components had to be check fitted and re-assembled. We are able to do these one off jobs purely from our huge amount of experience in the field.
